Shawn McCullion enters his first season as head men's and women's cross country coach and assistant men's basketball coach at Newberry College.
McCullion comes to Newberry after 10 seasons as associate head men's basketball coach at Emerson College in Boston, Mass. At Emerson, McCullion was responsible for scouting and game plan implementation for the Lions, who led Division III in field goal percentage at 52.7% in 2007-08. He prepared and ran daily practice sessions and was the team's lead recruiter.
Prior to his time at Emerson, McCullion worked at Notre Dame Prep School in Fitchburg, Mass., from 1998-2000. In his time at Notre Dame Prep, 20 players earned Division I scholarships. McCullion was an assistant coach at Rivier College in Nashua, N.H., in the season immediately following his college graduation, where he helped lead the Raiders to their first-ever appearance in the conference championship game.
McCullion earned his bachelor's degree from Emerson in 1997, where he was a three-year member of the basketball and golf teams. He scored 1,063 points in his basketball career and was the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player in 1997. He was also an all-GNAC golfer in 1997, as he lead Emerson to its first-ever league championship.
