NEWBERRY TO HOLD COLLECTION FOR TSUNAMI VICTIMS PRECEEDING BASKETBALL DOUBLEHEADER VS. PRESBYTERIAN THIS WEDNESDAY

by Ryan Gross, Newberry Sports Information

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Many of us may not remember where we were the day after Christmas, December 26th, but the people of Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, and eastern Africa will never forget that day. The day that an earthquake centered in Sumatra, sent a giant wave to the shoreline of the aforementioned countries, leaving in its wake a measure of devastation and death beyond most of our comprehension.

While we, the Newberry College family, have sat back over the last few weeks and watched the absolute destruction unfold in the news, many of us have wondered aloud, “What can I do to help?”

Luckily, we have the perfect opportunity lined up for you.

Newberry College, in conjunction with Lutheran World Relief (LWR), will be taking donations this Wednesday evening at Eleazer Arena, site of the men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader against archrival Presbyterian College. All proceeds will go directly LWR’s “Wave of Giving” campaign, started by the organization to distribute money directly (with as little red-tape as possible) to the neediest areas. Also, a certain percentage of each program will be donated to the “Wave of Giving”.

So, fans, students, faculty and the like, if you are planning on attending Wednesday’s game, please plan on making a small donation to the fund. Anything at all helps; even a single dollar donated to help purchase much needed medicine could make an impact on the lives of hundred of children who lost their entire family in a span of 30 seconds. If one dollar could do that much, what could five, ten, or 20 dollars do?

With each donation, a person will receive a special ribbon to wear during the game, letting everyone know that this campus is committed to making a difference in the lives of millions of people affected by this unspeakable tragedy.
