NEWBERRY, S.C. - The first phases of the construction of the new Newberry College baseball field are underway on the Smith Road property. The trees are now cleared from the property that will soon be known as the Newberry College Athletic Complex. (Photos appear at the bottom of the article.)
"It's very encouraging to see progress at the site," Newberry College director of athletics Andy Carter said. "Our vision for improving the athletic venues here at Newberry is becoming a reality, thanks to the support of our boosters, our Board of Trustees, and President Zais."
The baseball field itself will be ready for practice for the 2006 fall semester, with construction of auxiliary buildings taking place up until the season begins. Eventually, the complex will contain dugouts, locker rooms, restrooms, a concession area, a press box, and coaches' offices.
Phase two of the Newberry College Athletic Complex construction will add a softball field and a soccer field adjacent to the baseball facility, with offices, locker rooms, and additional facilities to follow.
Newberry College sponsors 15 intercollegiate sports and is a member of NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference, a nine-member league with institutions in North and South Carolina and Tennessee.
