Wolves ranked sixth in initial Southeast Region rankings

NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves' volleyball team is ranked sixth in the initial Southeast Region rankings, as released by the NCAA on Wednesday.

Newberry had a record of 15-11 at the time of the calculation and have added an in-region win over Erskine since then. The Wolves are one of five South Atlantic Conference teams in the region's top 10, with eight schools qualifying for the NCAA Tournament at the end of the season.

The Wolves are shooting for their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and are entering the crucial stretch of the regular season, closing out with road matches at Wingate, Catawba and Anderson. Wingate is the top-ranked team in the region.

"Reaching the NCAA Tournament this season was one of our team goals from the beginning," said head coach Todd Hay. "This gives us a good indication of where we stand, and that we are on the right track to reach that goal. I am proud of the team's performance to this point, but there is plenty of hard work still to be done."

The 2012 Newberry squad has won a school record nine conference matches and will challenge for the school record in overall wins with good play to close out the regular season and in the Food Lion SAC Tournament.
