Brodie, Smith earn first team All-SAC honorsOctober 31, 2012 ROCK HILL – Newberry women’s soccer duo of senior Cassie Smith and sophomore Gabrielle Brodie have been named to the All-South Atlantic Conference First Team, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. The selection of Smith (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) marks the second-straight season that Newberry has seen multiple players honored by the conference. The Wolves have not seen a first team selection since the 2009 season, when goalkeeper Emily Rhoades was honored as a first team selection. Not since the 2008 season, has Newberry seen multiple first team honorees. Both Newberry players earned their first ever All-SAC First Team selection. Smith previously had been honored by the conference with two selections to the second team. During the 2012 regular season Smith not only stood out on the defensive end, but also recorded a goal and two assists as she played every minute of the regular season. A 2011 NSCAA All-Southeast Region Third Team selection, Smith has started every match of her career and has only missed a single match in her four seasons at Newberry. Smith currently ranks No. 17 at Newberry in career assists. In the midfield, Brodie was recognized for her nine goal season that also saw the Kiwi record a pair of assists. Brodie recorded multi-goal matches three times this season, including a mutli-goal and multi-assist game against Bob Jones in early September. Only a sophomore, Brodie ranks No. 9 at Newberry in career goals and No. 10 in career points.
