Wolves ranked 13th in GolfWorld/NGCA preseason poll

NEW YORK - The Newberry College women's golf team is ranked 13th in the GolfWorld/NGCA Division II Coaches' Preseason Poll as announced Wednesday. Newberry returns two all-South Atlantic Conference players from last year's record-breaking SAC Championship squad which qualified for its third straight trip to the NCAA South Regional Tournament.

The Wolves are set to begin their first full season under head coach Clarissa Childs at the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate hosted by Carson-Newman on September 10-11 at the Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, Tenn., which will serve as host for the 2013 SAC Championships.

The all-SAC senior duo of Barbara Castro (Coruna, Spain) and Lisa Brandl (Nuremberg, Germany) lead an experienced lineup into the 2012-13 season. Castro averaged 79.0 strokes per round last year, with Brandl just behind her at 79.1 strokes per round.

Sophomore Eline Askeland (Oslo, Norway) averaged 79.9 strokes per round in her first semester of competition, and former all-SAC selections in Julia Daneshfar (Trophy Club, Texas) and Natalia Perez (Bogota, Colombia) round out the lineup. Also expected to challenge for the lineup is sophomore Korey Coleman (Stanford, Ky.).

Defending national champion Nova Southeastern leads the preseason poll and Newberry is the sixth-highest ranked South Region squad. Newberry and Tusculum (No. 24) are the only SAC teams in the top 25.
