Smith named preseason all-SAC; Wolves picked fourth in coaches' pollAugust 15, 2012
ROCK HILL - The Newberry College Wolves women's soccer team has been picked to finish fourth in the South Atlantic Conference in the annual poll of the league’s coaches, which was released Wednesday. The preseason all-conference teams were also announced with Cassie Smith named to the first team. Newberry enters its fifth season under head coach Karrie Miller, coming off a 12-7 season in which the Wolves reached the Food Lion SAC Tournament semifinals. Newberry returns 10 letterwinners from last year’s team, which finished the 2011 season winning five out of its last six games. Smith, a senior from Spartanburg, started 18 games last season for the Wolves and finished the year with three goals and six assists. The defender finished 2011 tied for second in the SAC in assists. Smith is a two-time all-SAC second team selection and was honored by the NSCAA as an all-Southeast Region third team pick in 2011. Last season’s conference tournament champions Wingate, have been picked as the favorite to win the 2012 SAC title, while defending regular season champions Lenoir-Rhyne is tabbed to finish second. Tusculum is slotted above Newberry at third, while Catawba was picked fifth behind the Wolves. Anderson and Lincoln Memorial were both picked to finish sixth, Mars Hill was selected eighth, Carson-Newman ninth and Brevard 10th.
