ROCK HILL - The Newberry College Wolves volleyball team has been picked to finish eighth in the South Atlantic Conference in the annual poll of the league's coaches, which was released Monday. The preseason all-conference teams were also announced with Samantha Parrish named to the first team and Lauren Prachar named to the second team.
Newberry will be in its first season under head coach Todd Hay in 2012 and is coming off of the school's first-ever NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament appearance. The Wolves received 32 votes in the preseason poll and return nine letterwinners from last year's squad along with an influx of new talent looking to push the Wolves back into the postseason and to new heights.
Parrish, a junior from Angola, Ind., was a second team all-SAC selection as a sophomore and was elevated to the first team. She already ranks in the top 10 in career kills at Newberry in just two seasons with 771 kills. In her sophomore season, she had 389 kills, which ranks fourth in school history. She averaged 3.24 kills and 3.31 digs per set and tallied 54 total blocks and 26 service aces.
Prachar, a sophomore from Fort Wayne, Ind., was a SAC all-freshman selection last season. She was second on the team in kills behind Parrish at 2.59 kills per set while also notching 3.05 digs per set. She had 31 blocks and 34 service aces in her first collegiate season.
Defending SAC champions Wingate leads the preseason poll, followed by SAC Tournament runners-up Catawba. Lincoln Memorial was third, with Tusculum fourth, Lenoir-Rhyne fifth, Mars Hill sixth and Carson-Newman seventh. Behind Newberry in eighth are Anderson in ninth and Brevard in 10th.
