Steinarsson named to Iceland National TeamRising sophomore looks to help Iceland qualify for EuroBasket 2013 August 6, 2012
REYKJAVIK, Iceland - Newberry College rising sophomore Aegir Steinarsson has been named to Iceland's senior men's basketball team as his home country attempts to qualify for the 2013 FIBA EuroBasket Championships. Steinarsson will play with the team in a 10-game group slate while still completing his Newberry coursework. Steinarsson is the youngest member of the Iceland team and is coming off of a freshman season where he averaged 7.6 points, 4.6 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game for the Wolves. The Iceland team is one of six in Group A of the EuroBasket qualification. There are six groups in the qualification process, with the top two teams in each group and the four best third place teams advances. Host country Slovenia and the European teams from the Olympic qualification tournament - FYR Macedonia, France, Great Britain, Greece, Lithuania, Russia and Spain - have already qualified for the tournament.
