Wolves fall to Francis Marion, 7-3DJ Roberts, Stanland record first career RBIs February 15, 2012
NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves recorded 11 hits but stranded five runners in scoring position in a 7-3 loss to the Francis Marion Patriots at the Smith Road Complex on Wednesday afternoon. Newberry falls to 2-5 on the season and begins South Atlantic Conference play with a three-game series against Brevard at home. The teams will start the series with a 6 p.m. Friday game followed by a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.), Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.), Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) and Causey Stanland (Anderson, S.C.) each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Stanland and DJ Roberts (Chapin, S.C.) each recorded their first career RBIs. Francis Marion opened the scoring in the top of the first on a two-run double by Stephen Tarkenton and an RBI double by Jarrod Reed in the fifth put the Patriots' lead at 3-0. Stanland led off the bottom of the fifth with a line drive double to left-center and came home on a Vogel RBI single to make it a 3-1 game. The Patriots extended their lead in the sixth inning on a two-out RBI double by Brock McCallister and a two-out, two-run single by Reggie Weatherford pushed FMU's lead out to 6-2 at the seventh inning stretch. FMU scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth, and DJ Roberts' and Stanland's back-to-back run-scoring hits gave Newberry life, but a game-ending double play snuffed out the comeback hopes. Alex Roberts (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) fell to 1-1 on the year, allowing four runs - two earned - on nine hits in six innings. The Newberry staff combined to strike out 10 Patriots.
