Wolves let No. 1 Francis Marion slip away, 5-4
McElwee hits Newberry's first homer of the season
February 8, 2012
FLORENCE, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves held a seventh inning lead over the top-ranked team in the NCWBA poll, but the Francis Marion Patriots scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to earn a 5-4 lead at Cormell Field on Wednesday.
Newberry falls to 1-4 on the season, with all four losses coming by just one run. FMU is now 2-1 on the season.
Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) was the only Newberry player with multiple hits and was the first player to score after hitting a one-out single in the second inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Wilbur Caldwell (Newberry, S.C.) , Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) hit an RBI single to left-center to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
Scaggs drove in Newberry's next run in the third, with a two-out RBI single driving in Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) and giving the scarlet and gray a 2-0 lead.
Newberry starting pitcher Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) pitched four scoreless innings and was not eligible for a pitching decision, but helped the Wolves' cause with a two-out, two-run homerun in the top of the seventh to make it a 4-0 game.
The Wolves' pitching had been excellent through six innings, but four unearned runs was Newberry's undoing. Tyler Boyd hit an RBI fielder's choice with two outs, and a fielding error led to an RBI single by Brock McCallister, a two-run single by Buddy Sosnoskie and what turned out to be the game-winning RBI single by Stephen Tarkenton to push FMU to a 5-4 lead.
Newberry tried to rally in the final two innings, but left a runner stranded on third base in both the eighth and ninth to end the game. The Wolves stranded eight runners in scoring position.
Evan Brown was tagged with the loss, allowing two hits which turned into the game-tying and game-winning runs. The Wolves' staff combined to strike out nine batters, including five punchouts in his four innings.
The Wolves have five home games at the Smith Road Complex next week. Newberry hosts Erskine on Tuesday afternoon before a rematch with the Patriots on Wednesday afternoon. The Wolves start South Atlantic Conference play with a three-game series versus Brevard on Friday and Saturday.
