February 4, 2012
GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning but could not score again as the host Lander Bearcats came away with a 2-1 victory in 10 innings at Dolny Stadium on Saturday.
Both teams are now 1-1 on the season entering Sunday's 2 p.m rubber match at Dolny.
The Wolves scored in the first inning for the second straight game to open the season, with Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) drawing a leadoff walk and advancing to third on a single by Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.). Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) smacked an RBI single to centerfield to put Newberry up 1-0, but the Wolves would end the inning by leaving the bases loaded.
Patrick Grady hit an RBI single for Lander in the third inning to tie things up.
Newberry could not capitalize on its opportunities to score, keeping the Bearcats in the game. The Wolves would strand 11 runners total, with eight ending the inning in scoring position. In comparison, Lander only stranded four runners in scoring position.
Rufus finished the game 3-for-4 with a double in the ninth inning, but was left there. The Bearcats saw a leadoff double by Jeff May in the bottom of the ninth go to waste with three straight outs, sending the game to the extra frame.
Newberry went down in order in the 10th, and a two-out Lander rally was capped by AJ Nunziato's walkoff single to end the game.
Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) got the start on the mound, allowing one earned run on five hits in four innings. Middle relief was fantastic for Newberry with Jonathan Rosenberger (Anderson, S.C.) and Matt Chapman (Summerville, S.C.) combining for four scoreless innings with only two baserunners.
Tanner Petrey (West Columbia, S.C.; 0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing the walkoff run in the 10th. He went 1.2 innings and gave up four hits.
