Newberry men's basketball adds UMass starter David Gibbs to roster

Gibbs started 16 games at point guard for the Minutemen in 2009-10; Joins Wolves for 2010-11 campaign

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College head men's basketball coach Dave Davis has announced the addition of David Gibbs to the Wolves' roster for the 2010-11 season. Gibbs, a 6-foot-4, 180 lbs. point guard, comes to Newberry from UMass, where he played for two seasons and started 16 games in 2009-10.

Gibbs, who hails from East Hartford, Conn., is a graduate of the Masters School, where he was coached by Ralph Auriental. Gibbs was ranked as the 138th best player in the nation by Rivals.com coming out of high school. Scout.com ranked Gibbs as the 28th best point guard in the nation, while Rivals tabbed him as the 33rd best point guard nationally. David was rated a 3-star recruit by Scouthoops.com and received a grade of 89 from ESPN Basketball Recruiting in 2008. Gibbs averaged 21 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists per game in his senior season and 22.5 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds per game as a junior at the Masters School.

At UMass, Gibbs netted 11 points, while connecting on all three of his three-point attempts on November 27, 2010, against Rutgers in the Legends Classic. Gibbs also had a career high six assists against Grambling State on December 11, 2010. Gibbs averaged nearly 20 minutes per game as a sophomore in 2009-10, starting in 16 of his 21 appearances. As a freshman, Gibbs played in all 30 of the Minutemen's games, earning starts in the final three games of the season for head coach Derek Kellogg.
