Scarlet and gray improve by 16 strokes but still occupy 9th place

After two rounds at the NCAA Super Regional, Newberry is in last place

SALISBURY, N.C. – The No. 11 Newberry College women’s golf program remained in 9th place through two rounds at the NCAA Division II Super Region 2 tournament in Salisbury, N.C. on Monday.

The scarlet and gray combined for a team stroke total of 314 (+30), 16 fewer strokes than Sunday’s 330, at the par-71, 6,094-yard Country Club of Salisbury. Newberry trails tournament leader Nova Southeastern University by 38 strokes. The Sharks finished play on Monday with a one stroke advantage over Florida Southern College with a two round total of 606 (304-302; +38).

Florida Southern shot a 607 (304-303; +39) while Rollins College and Barry University are tied for 3rd with two-day combined totals of 614. Rollins shot a 308-306 split and Barry tallied a 309-305 first two rounds.

The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a qualifying team will advance to the national championship on May 12-15 at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.

Individually, Maria Besio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) moved into a tie for 16th shaving three strokes of her score from the first round. On Sunday, Besio shot a 76, 5-over par, and sits at 155 strokes (79-76; +13) for the tournament.

Freshman Josefine Mensner (Lorenskog, Norway) finished the second round with a combined stroke total of 161 (82-79; +19) and in a tie for 29th. Natalia Perez (Bogota, Colombia) shot a 9-over par round (84-80; +22) on day two and completed play in a tie for 38th.

Barbara Castro (Coruna, Spain) is tied for 40th with a 165 (85-80; +23) and Lisa Brandl is in 45th after a two-day total of 167 (88-79; +25).

The third and final round of the NCAA Division II Super Region 2 tournament will begin on Tuesday morning.
