Maria Besio and Daniel Stanley named Chick-Fil-A Student-Athletes of the Month for April

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Two South Atlantic Conference champion golfers, Maria Besio and Daniel Stanley, have been named the Chick-Fil-A Newberry College Student Athletes of the Month for the month of April 2010, it was announced today. The award is presented by Chick-Fil-A of Bush River Road in conjunction with the Newberry College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Besio, a sophomore from Buenos Aires, Argentina, competed in one tournament during the month of April, winning the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships on April 19-20. Maria tied a SAC record for 54-hole low, shooting a 225 (74-76-75; +9) at the par-72, 5,821-yard Etowah Valley Country Club. Besio, a first team All-SAC selection for 2010, is riding a streak of seven consecutive sub-80 rounds and in her last four tournaments only six individuals have scored better, as she has a win/loss record of 243-6. Besio’s SAC Championship win is her fourth career victory and second consecutively after winning the Ralph Hargett Invitational in late March.

Stanley, a junior from Inman, S.C., competed in one tournament during the month of April, winning the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships in Hendersonville, N.C., on April 19-20 at the Etowah Valley Country Club. Stanley became the second Newberry men’s golfer to win the individual championship. Daniel shot a 216, even par, to hold off Jamie Chapman of Lincoln Memorial and pace the field of 44 participants. Daniel shot a 73-71-72 over three rounds. The SAC Championship win is Stanley’s second consecutive tournament victory after topping the leaderboard at the Bearcat Classic in the end of March.

These two athletes were presented with plaques recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of the athletic offices for the entire school year. A total of eight female and male Chick-Fil-A Student Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2009-10 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
