Newberry wrestling works to beautify campus with pine straw projectApril 27, 2010NEWBERRY, S.C. - Members of the Newberry College wrestling team took a break from studying for final exams to beautify the Newberry campus by spreading pine straw on Wednesday afternoon. “We take pride in our campus and want it to look presentable,” said Drew Squires (Stafford, Va.). “Our team is a part of this community.” Nearly a dozen wrestlers took part in the project. Kraig Crawford (Lexington, S.C.), Matt Wade (Easton, Md.), Davis Bagwell (Oak Mountain, Ala.), Joey Grisko (Gloucester Township, N.J.), Zach Howerton (Lexington, S.C.), Clint Spencer (Carthage, Mo.), Eli Charles (Green Cove Springs, Fla.), Brian Newman (Toms River, N.J.), Tayler Decker (Desoto, Mo.) and Drew Squires joined assistant wrestling coach Kelly Revells and assistant wrestling coach and assistant athletic director for business Matt Finley to spread pine straw around MacLean Gymnasium. Pine straw provides nutrients to plants and slows down weed growth, as well as retains moisture. External operations interns Tim Rath and Mike Mims joined the wrestlers in the improvement effort. “It’s great to see our student-athletes involved in making our campus a better place,” Rath said. |
