Newberry stays at No. 2 in national rankings

Four Newberry wrestlers earn individual rankings

EDMOND, Okla. - The No. 2 Newberry College wrestling team held onto its spot at No. 2 in the newest edition of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll for the fifth straight time.

Newberry (14-4) received 152 points in the poll after going 5-0 at the Super Region Duals with wins over Shippensburg and now-ranked No. 5 Pittsburgh-Johnstown, No. 18 Kutztown, No. 17 West Liberty and Seton Hill. The scarlet and gray also posted a 25-12 victory over No. 11 UNC Pembroke Tuesday evening. UNC Pembroke entered Tuesday’s dual unranked.

Newberry also boasts four wrestlers individually ranked. The University of Nebraska-Omaha was the unanimous choice at No. 1. Newberry has gone 8-1 against ranked teams in Division II this season, with the squad’s only loss coming to Nebraska-Omaha.

Sheridan Moran (Lafayette, La.) keeps the No. 4 ranking at 133 lbs. for the second consecutive poll. Moran made his first-ever appearance in the last edition of the rankings and went 4-1 at the Super Region I Duals. Moran then added a major decision win against UNC Pembroke on Tuesday. His Duals record included major decisions over Seton Hill and Shippensburg, a fall over Kutztown and a decision against West Liberty. Moran now has a record of 20-8 this season.

Curtis Chenoweth (Clearwater, Kan.) makes his first appearance of the season in the rankings at No. 6 at 174 lbs. Chenoweth has compiled a 19-11 record in 2009-2010 after going 5-0 at the Super Region I Duals, highlighted by falls against Pitt-Johnstown and Kutztown and a 15-0 technical fall against Seton Hill. Chenoweth narrowly missed winning his ninth straight match of the season with a 6-4 sudden victory loss against UNC Pembroke’s J.J. Davis on Tuesday night. Davis is currently ranked No. 4 in the poll.

Bryant Blanton (Summerville, S.C.) moves to No. 7 from No. 2 at 184 lbs. Blanton won his 30th match of the season on Tuesday night with a fall over UNC Pembroke to give him a 30-7 record on the season. Blanton achieved several milestones with Tuesday’s win and going 2-3 at the Super Region I Duals. The fall over UNC Pembroke marked Blanton’s 15th of the 2009-2010 campaign, which moves him to second place in the Newberry history for falls in a season. He now trails his own record of 16, which he set last season. Blanton now also has 42 falls for his career, extending his record of most all-time in Newberry history. His current 30-7 record places him in seventh place with most wins in a season.

Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) improves to No. 2 from No. 3 at 197 lbs. Griffin went 4-0 at the Super Region I Duals and won on Tuesday against UNC Pembroke to give him a 22-3 record for the season. Griffin’s Duals weekend included wins over Shippensburg, Pitt-Johnstown, Kutztown and Seton Hill. Griffin now stands at 110 wins for his career, placing him in second in Newberry history behind Cy Wainwright’s mark of 128.

Newberry will next take on Belmont Abbey and Limestone at home on Tuesday, February 9. The squad is slated to face Belmont Abbey at 6 p.m. and Limestone at 7:30 p.m.
