Newberry finishes at No. 5 in final NSCAA Southeast Region rankings

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Newberry College women’s soccer team stayed at No. 5 in the Southeast Region of the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II poll for this season, which was released today.

Newberry (13-4-2, 5-2-1 SAC) will spend its second week at No. 5 after dropping one spot to No. 5 last week. This is the ninth consecutive week Newberry has appeared in the rankings.

Newberry played one match last week, a Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament quarterfinal matchup against Lenoir-Rhyne. The team lost in penalty kicks, 3-2, but the match technically counted as a 1-1 tie.

Newberry is one of five South Atlantic Conference teams to nab a regional ranking this week. Carson-Newman assumes the No. 1 spot in the region, up from No. 2. Carson-Newman also moves up four spots to the No. 7 ranking nationally. Wingate, Catawba, and Tusculum make up the rest of the SAC’s representation in the regional rankings. Tusculum stays No. 4, Catawba’s rank stays at No. 6 and Wingate rounds out SAC teams at No. 7.

Newberry will make its first ever NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Tournament appearance in its next match when the team travels to Jefferson City, Tenn. to face Tusculum on Friday, November 13. Tusculum, in addition to securing the No. 4 Southeast Region ranking, is receiving votes in the NSCAA national poll. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
