Newberry's Clemente Martin named SAC Men's Basketball Player of the WeekSenior forward averaged 22.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game last week March 2, 2009 ROCK HILL, S.C. – Newberry College’s Clemente Martin has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Basketball Player Of The Week, league officials announced today. Martin, a senior forward from Freeport, Bahamas, averaged 22.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in leading Newberry to a 2-0 week with a pair of league victories over Brevard (73-62) at home on Wednesday and Lincoln Memorial (73-69) Saturday on the road. Martin started the week with a game-high 24 points including three three-pointers in the victory over the Tornados before tallying 21 points, eight rebounds and six steals in Newberry’s triumph against Lincoln Memorial. Martin, who averages a team-high 18.4 points per game, has led Newberry to a 20-7 mark on the year, a 10-6 record in SAC play and a second seed in the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament. Second-seeded Newberry will host seventh-seeded Mars Hill on Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament.
