Furman wins exhibition over Newberry, 67-46

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Newberry College men's basketball team fell to the Paladins of Furman University, 67-46, in exhibition action at Timmons Arena on Friday night.

Newberry struggled from the floor due to a solid defensive effort from the Paladins. The scarlet and gray were led on offense by 14 points from senior Clemente Martin (Freeport, Bahamas) and 12 points from sophomore Grant Domsic (Winter Garden, Fla.).

The Paladins were paced by 15 points from Jordan Miller (Memphis, Tenn.), while Connor Nolte (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored 12 and Darryl Evans (Spartanburg, S.C.) netted 10.

Early season kinks will still need to  be worked out by both teams, as Newberry turned the ball over 21 times and Furman lost the ball 20 times.

Furman was able to take the lead in the middle of the first half due to Newberry foul trouble. The Paladins were 13-of-17 from the charity strip in the opening half and led, 36-22, at the break.

The second half was more even, but Newberry was only able to shoot 6-of-26 (23.1 percent) from the floor, and the hosts came away with the 21-point victory.

Kendrick Johnson (Orangeburg, S.C.) had a solid evening on the defensive end of the floor, blocking six shots, five of which came in the second half.

Newberry kicks off the regular season on Saturday, November 15, at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C. Furman's regular slate starts on Friday, November 14, with a home game with Division III Emory.
