Newberry ranked second in the East Region
Nine of ten wrestlers ranked in the top six for their weight class

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Wrestling team is ranked second in the pre season NCAA Division II East Region Coaches Poll according to the an InterMat release Wednesday. The Indians received 79 points, just one point fewer then the top ranked and twenty time east region champions, the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown.
Newberry has nine of ten wrestlers ranked in the top six for their weight class. Topping their respective weight classes with a number one regional ranking are Alonso Azumendi at 165 lbs and Kelly Anundson at 197 lbs.
Other Newberry wrestlers who are ranked include freshman Matt Oliver, who is ranked 6th at 125 lbs., junior Andrew Young who is ranked 2nd at 133 lbs., junior Tony Washington who is ranked 4th at 141 lbs., sophomore Latra Collick who is ranked 2nd at 149 lbs., junior Brandon Kelly who is ranked 5th at 157 lbs., sophomore Keeno Griffin who is ranked 2nd at 184 lbs., and junior Cy Wainwright who is ranked 3rd at 285 lbs.
Coach Jason Valek has added one of the nationís best recruiting classes to a team that returns six national qualifiers and went 17-5-1 in its second year ever as a varsity program.
The Indians host an intrasquad match at home on November 3rd at 12:30 p.m. before opening their season on November 10 when they travel to Pembroke, N.C. to participate in the Braves Open.
