Athletes Helping Athletes
This is an endowed athletic scholarship that was established in the spring of 1999. The drive was led by Mr. Danny Brabham of Columbia, SC. This drive culminated and was part of the successful "Million Dollar Drive" for Newberry College Athletes. Former athletes and other supporters made this a reality. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
 
Coach William L. "Billy" Laval Athletic Scholarship
Friends and former players remembered the legendary Billy Laval by establishing an endowed athletic scholarship in his name in 1955. Laval ended his coaching career at Newberry after stints at Furman and USC. Athletes at Newberry College during his tenure from 1938 to 1950 fondly remember the "Ole Man" for his standards of excellence and his innovative approaches to athletics. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
 
Bolen-Creech Athletic Scholarship
Ann and Barry Bolen established this scholarship in memory of Mrs. Dot Creech in the spring of 2001. Barry is a 1972 graduate of Newberry College. Ann and Barry's sons Biff and Bryan also attended Newberry College. This scholarship will be awarded to a student-athlete who demonstrates athletic ability, academic achievement and sound character.
 
Boozer-Hipp Athletic Scholarship
Mrs. Dorothy Boozer Hipp and Mr. Olin L. Hipp established this scholarship in 1996. Mr. and Mrs. Hipp and their family are loyal and staunch supporters of Newberry College and especially Newberry College Athletics. They both attended Newberry College. Mr. Hipp was a letterman and a 1939 graduate of the school. The scholarship will be awarded to a student-athlete who demonstrates athletic ability, academic achievement and sound character.
 
C. A. Dufford, Jr. Athletic Scholarship 
A continuous member of the Athletic Club since its origin in 1956, "Doc" has befriended and mended Newberry College athletes for over four decades. His sideline presence was a familiar scene to all Newberrians. Friends chose to honor this 1942 graduate and former member of the Board of Trustees by establishing this scholarship in his name. The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
 
C. A. Dufford, Sr. Athletic Scholarship 
This scholarship was established by C.A. Dufford, Sr. in 1985. Members of the Dufford family have been very strong supporters of the athletic programs here at Newberry for many years. Until his death, Mr. Dufford remained one of our most loyal fans. This scholarship is given annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
 
Charles J. Shealy Athletic Scholarship
Reverend Charles J. Shealy, Jr. was a 1940 graduate of Newberry College. He established this scholarship in 1981. Pastor Shealy served on the Board of Trustees from 1979-82.  Members of the Shealy family have been active supporters of Newberry athletic programs since at least 1906 when Rev. Shealy's father and uncle were on the baseball team. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
 
Charlie S. Haggard Athletic Scholarship 
This scholarship was established in 2005 by Charlie's wife, Jean and sons to honor this alum for his support of Newberry College Athletics. Charlie and his family are grateful that in 1960, Newberry College provided him a scholarship which provided him a college education. This scholarship is awarded annually to an athlete who demonstrates academic achievement, athletic ability, leadership and strong character.
 
Clara D. Wertz Athletic Scholarship
Clara Wertz is a retired Newberry business woman who played basketball at Newberry College. She established this scholarship in 1987.  An avid golfer, today, she remains a loyal supporter of the college athletic program and has asked that this scholarship  be awarded to a deserving female athlete.
 
Clifford B. Morgan Academic/Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Cliff Morgan who is an inductee on the South Carolina Hall of Fame. At Newberry, he lettered in every sport and is a member of the Newberry College Hall of Fame. Morgan was a loyal supporter of Newberry College until his death. His wife, Ruth, remains a staunch Newberry fan. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student-athlete that exhibits leadership potential and high moral character. The recipient must demonstrate financial need, be accepted through regular admissions process and meet all college standards, and must exhibit the intent to complete a degree program. The award may be renewed annually provided the recipient maintains a 2.5 grade point average on a scale where a 4.0 is an "A" grade.
 
Davis L. Batson Athletic Scholarship
Mr. James T. Berry established this scholarship to honor his Sunday School teacher, a humanitarian and friend. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student-athlete who demonstrates athletic ability, academic achievement and sound character.
 
Doris Dufford Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established in the summer of 2005 by the Estate of C. A. Dufford to honor his sister Doris. It will honor a women's basketball player and a women's softball player majoring in Physical Education. The student will have finished in the top 25% of their high school graduating class and must maintain a 3.0 GPA to receive the scholarship from academic year to academic year.
 
Ernest J. Ezell Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established at Newberry College by Mr. Ernest J. Ezell of Spartanburg, S.C., in 1996. Mr. Ezell is a 1942 graduate of Newberry College. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a student-athlete in sound academic standing who has demonstrated a financial need. First priority will be given to a football player. If there is no football player that meets this criteria, the scholarship will be awarded to a men's basketball player.
 
E. Marion Chaplin Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Marion Chaplin, a 1953 graduate with special interests in the value of athletics. Chaplin has been a member of the Board of Trustees and is a past President of the Athletic Club. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student-athlete who demonstrates athletic ability, academic record, financial need and character.
 
E. W. "Red" Burnette Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the Newberry College Athletic Club in honor of Coach "Red" Burnette in 1955. Coach Burnette served Newberry College as a coach, teacher/professor, and as an administrator for 1952-81. He was a great teacher and advocate of excellence in athletics, academics and sound character. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student-athlete that best  exhibits these qualities.

Eargle Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1976 by the late Dr. and Mrs. Homer Eargle of Orangeburg, S.C. A 1925 graduate of Newberry, Dr. Eargle was a member of the  College's Board of Trustees from 1952-85. While a Trustee, he was chairman of the Board's Council on Athletics. In 1974, the Alumni Association named him as one of two "Outstanding Alumni of the Year". This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
 
Fred Herren Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the Newberry College Athletic Club to honor this former football coach. Herren was head coach for Newberry from 1968-77. In 1971, he was selected as South Carolina's Coach of the Year, as well as, NAIA District VI Football Coach of the Year. He was also named South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year in 1975. After leaving his active coaching duties, Herren served the college as Alumni Director, Athletic Director and Vice President for Development. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
 
George & Martha Toole Middleton Athletic Scholarship
The scholarship has been established by Ms. Genie M. Towery in honor of her father and mother George and Martha Middleton. It will be awarded to first a junior or senior that plays football, that exhibits a need and has good academic standing. If no one fits the first criteria the scholarship will be awarded to any football player that has good academic standing and exhibits financial need. If there is still no one fitting this criteria, it is awarded to any student in good academic standing, exhibits financial need and is on any Newberry College intercollegiate women's or men's team.
 
George Segelken Memorial Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1979 through the estate of the late George Segelken of Summerville, S.C. It is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete.
 
Graham, Loadholt, Long, Cook Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. James L. Graham, Jr. It will be awarded to a student-athlete who demonstrates athletic ability, academic achievement and sound character.
 
Graham-Weber Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1955 to honor Reverend Harry Weber, a standout football player and 1942 graduate of Newberry College. It is awarded annually to a rising senior who is chosen on basis of academic record and accomplishments made on the gridiron. Mrs. Weber, wife of Reverend Weber, and a 1944 graduate of Newberry College, was most instrumental in establishing this athletic scholarship.
 
Harry "Flick" Eleazer Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Eleazer's wife, Annie, in memory of the 1928 Newberry graduate, who was inducted into the Newberry College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977. The Eleazer Arena in the Physical Education Complex is named in his memory. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student-athlete based on athletic ability, academic record, financial need and character.
 
Harry Hedgepath Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established to honor the late Harry Hedgepath and the many people he coached and taught at Newberry High School and who later attended Newberry College. A legend in Newberry, Hedgepath served as President of the Athletic Club. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete with financial need.
 
Harvey Kirkland Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by friends of Coach Kirkland, a 1937 graduate of Newberry. Kirkland coached football from 1952-67. In 1977 he was inducted into the Newberry College Hall of Fame. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete with financial need.
 
Heath Benedict Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in the fall of 2008 to honor the late Heath Benedict. Heath was an outstanding offensive lineman at Newberry College bringing national attention and recognition to the program. The anonymous donor wishes for the scholarship to be awarded annually to a walk-on football player or trainer that has exemplified sound character and demonstrates good effort and attitude in the classroom and on the field.
 
Herb Sanders-Ethan Howard Baseball Scholarship
Family and friends of these two young gentlemen established this scholarship in their memory in November of 1996. Both of them were exceptional people and athletes. It is awarded annually to a baseball player chosen by the  baseball coaching staff. The recipient must exemplify positive leadership ability, outstanding character and the positive attributes these fine young men left.
 
J. C. "Fox" Boozer Athletic Scholarship 
This scholarship was established by friends of Fox Boozer in 1985. Coach Boozer graduated from Newberry College in 1934. He was an outstanding athlete and made a tremendous contribution to the field of education and athletics. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
  
J. T. "Pete" Berry Athletic Scholarship 
This scholarship was established by Mr. J. T. "Pete" Berry in April of 1997. Graduating from Newberry College in 1942, Mr. Berry participated in football during his four years for the Scarlet and Gray. Pete is a loyal and true supporter of Newberry College and especially Newberry College athletics. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student-athlete who demonstrates athletic ability, academic achievement and sound character.
 
J. W. Ingram and E. T. Driggers Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by friends and relatives of these Newberry College graduates and long time coaches at Lexington High School. It is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete who lives in Lexington School District #1. Lexington High School receives first priority, followed by Gilbert and Pelion High Schools.
 
Jerry S. Chitty Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2005 by the Newberry College Athletic Club Board of Advisors, family and friends of Jerry. He became Executive Director of the Newberry College Athletic Club in 1993. Jerry wants this scholarship to be awarded annually to a student-athlete that represents Newberry College with strong character and is a solid student in the classroom. Jerry's lifelong dedication has been working with young people in public schools of South Carolina and Newberry College.
 
Jesse G. "Rabbit" Athletic Scholarship 
Reverend George M. and Daphne S. Rushe established this scholarship in 1998 in the memory of his father. Jesse G. Rushe was a 1929 graduate of Newberry College and is a member of the Newberry College Hall of Fame. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student-athlete that demonstrates athletic ability, academic achievement and sound character.
 
Maurice Wilson Baseball Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1990 by the family of Maurice Wilson. It is awarded annually the junior or senior baseball player with the highest grade point average.
 
R. Nelson Schofield Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by friends and family of R. Nelson Schofield. Mr. Schofield was an outstanding two-year tackle for Newberry. After serving in World War II, Schofield returned to Newberry College and made Little All-American. He was a 1990 Hall of Fame inductee. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
 
 
Otho & Mary Shealy Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Otho ('48) and Mary ("45) Shealy in the fall of 2005 to honor their children Judy, Neal and Brent all graduates of Newberry College. Mr. Shealy served on the Board of Trustees from Dec. 1962 to Jan. 1974 and again from Oct. 1976 to May 1983. This scholarship is awarded annually to a male or female student-athlete of strong Christian character, who demonstrates academic achievement, athletic ability and leadership.
 
Q. Don Maxwell Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Maxwell, a 1948 alumnus who played football, basketball and baseball for Newberry College. He is a former chairman of the Board of Sovran Bank and continues to be a loyal college supporter. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
 
Robert & Dottie Hampton Basketball Scholarship
Robert & Dottie Hampton established this scholarship in the spring of 2003. This scholarship honors basketball coaches at Newberry College, Coach George Pickett and Tom Quinn. It is awarded annually to a male or female basketball player at Newberry College that exemplifies need, ability and outstanding character.
 
Roy E. & Ada Belle Hudgens Athletic Scholarship 
Dr. and Mrs. John Hudgens, III established this scholarship in 1999. It honors a 1926 graduate of Newberry College, Mr. Roy E. Hudgens and his wife Ada Belle. This scholarship is awarded annually to a baseball player who exemplifies character, leadership and academic scholarship.
 
Steven B. Fuson Basketball Scholarship
This scholarship honors the memory of Steven Fuson, a 1964 graduate of Indiana and was established in the fall of 2003. It is awarded annually to a basketball player who demonstrates athletic ability, academic achievement and sound character.
 
Sue Wingard Athletic Scholarship
Mary "Sue" Wingard was a true supporter of the scarlet and gray. This scholarship was established by her family and friends in 1985. It is awarded annually to a deserving female student-athlete.
 
Thomas A. "Bucko" Edens Football Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1996 by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Edens, Jr. "Bucko" was Little All-American for Newberry and is a member of the Newberry College Hall of Fame. This scholarship is awarded annually to a football player that was the most outstanding offensive lineman (tackle, guard or center) in the preceding season.
 
Thomas Percy Culclasure Football Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2004 by Tommy's wife, Donna and her two sons to honor this 1965 alumnus of Newberry College. It is awarded annually to a football player that shares the same enthusiasm and dedication that Tommy had for Newberry College.

Vernon Epting Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established in honor of this outstanding 1936 alumnus of Newberry College. Epting was a member of the College's Board of Trustees from 1979-85 and long time supporter of athletics. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
 
W. C. "Billy" Carter Athletic Scholarship
The Newberry College Athletic Club Board of Advisors chose to honor the memory of Billy Carter ('38) by establishing this scholarship in his name. A strong advocate of academic excellence, Billy also appreciated the value of athletics in the lives of students at Newberry. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
 
W. Frank Hipp Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1972 by Mrs. C. Guy Gunter of Greenville, S.C., in memory of her father, W. Frank Hipp. In 1907 Newberry College graduate, Mr. Hipp served several years on the College's Board of Trustees before his death in 1943. He organized Liberty Life Insurance Co., in Grenville in 1919. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student-athlete in financial need.
 
Gene Williams Family Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established in honor of Gene Williams. The purpose is to support a Newberry College student-athlete in need of financial aid who exemplifies sound character, good effort in the classroom and in their chosen sport and are from the Pee Dee area of South Carolina. The donor wishes that priority be given to student-athlete from Dillon and Marlboro Counties when possible to support students from childhood hometowns of Mr. & Mrs. Williams.
 
John Harley Newell Memorial Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established in the spring of 2009 to honor the late John Harley Newell, a 2008 graduate of Newberry College. Family and friends of John came together to honor this great player, student, friend and son. This scholarship is awarded annually to first a Junior or Senior football player who has a financial need. If any additional funds are available, it may be awarded to a student-athlete of good academic standing who has a financial need.
